We provide inclusive opportunities for everyone to get active and participate in physical activity, whether you are starting out, recovering from injury, living with a long-term health condition, or are an older adult.
The Active Lifestyles programme of classes and activities runs at venues across the city. From pool-based activities to walking groups, seated exercise, sport, and higher impact classes, there is something for everyone, whatever your interest or ability.
The Active Lifestyles team is on hand to help you find the right opportunity and take the next steps to become and stay active.
Our Classes
Our Active Lifestyles timetable brings together classes and activities across Aberdeen in a way that helps you find the right option by class level, activity type, and day of the week.
Class levels are designed to help you choose an activity that suits your current fitness, confidence, and support needs. Most opportunities can be adapted by our instructors to make them inclusive.
All Active Lifestyles classes must be booked in advance.
Class Descriptions
Classes are grouped into levels to help you find the right opportunity for you.
Class levels are a guide only. Most of our opportunities can be adapted by our highly skilled instructors to make them inclusive.
(R) indicates referral classes only.
Low-intensity exercise with the aim of making the activities of daily living more manageable. These sessions are often based on or behind a chair and focus on improving strength, balance, and walking.
Walk Aberdeen Social Walking Groups
Short, sociable, and community-based walks, lasting up to an hour with opportunities suitable for everyone. Walks are free and are led by trained volunteer walk leaders and finish with a cup of tea and chat for which there is a small charge.
Move More Health Walk (R)
A one hour walk which departs from the same centre each week but has a variety of different routes to ensure no two weeks are the same. Longer and shorter routes are available for participants of all fitness levels.
First Steps
This class offers 20 minutes of strength and balance exercises followed by a short, flat walk.
Active Lifestyles Gentle Exercise
A gentle exercise class to music that allows participants to move and awaken all areas of the body working on fitness, balance, coordination, and strength.
Active Lifestyles Seated Yoga
A gentler form of yoga that can be done sitting on a chair or standing while using the chair for support. The class focuses on mobility, flexibility, strength, and balance.
Active Lifestyles Stable & Able (R)
A session for those looking to improve their strength, balance, and posture.
Active Lifestyles Stable & Able Maintenance
A session for those looking to improve their strength, balance, and posture. This session is great for people currently attending one Stable & Able session and encouraged to attend a second class.
Carers Stable & Able (R)
A session for those looking to improve their strength, balance, and posture. Sessions are open to people with a caring role and the person they care for.
Exercise After Stroke (R)
12-week progressive exercise class for participants who have had a stroke. The aim is to improve strength, function, and stamina.
Move More Gentle Movement (R)
For those who have not been active for a while and would consider themselves to have a lower level of fitness. Class based on Qi Gong which focuses on slow and controlled movements of the body in time with breathing. All exercises can be done seated or standing.
Seated Exercise
An exercise class aimed at improving participants’ strength, balance, and general fitness to help make the activities of daily living more manageable. The class can be done seated, however there are options to perform the exercises in standing for participants who are safe to do so. There are regular breaks during the class and the exercises can all be tailored.
Classes designed to improve strength, balance, coordination, and conditioning. These classes are more dynamic but still have balance support options if required.
Active Lifestyles Adapted Tai Chi
A gentle introduction to Tai Chi, incorporating slow, continuous movements that are gentle on the joints and muscles.
Active Lifestyles Pilates
A low impact class focusing on flexibility and muscular strength with an emphasis on postural alignment, core strength, and balance. This is a floor-based class.
Active Lifestyles Retro Rhythms
Upbeat but low impact exercise to music class giving a great full-body workout.
Active Lifestyles Steady Steps
A class aimed at improving balance, coordination, strength, and cardiovascular fitness all in 60 minutes.
Active Lifestyles Technogym Movers
A progressive 12-week class for those new or returning to Technogym. The class aims to improve confidence, fitness levels, and above all promote enjoyable exercise.
Active Lifestyles Zumba Gold
Low impact, high fun, and easy to follow Zumba choreography that focuses on balance, range of motion, and coordination.
Move More Circuit Group (R)
This one-hour class is ideal for those who wish to push that bit more. Participants move around a variety of stations working on all major muscle groups with the support of our fully qualified instructors.
Active Lifestyles Zumba Toning
Low impact and lots of fun, this easy to follow Zumba choreography puts some extra emphasis on toning and sculpting to define those muscles.
Technogym
The class aims to improve confidence during exercise, fitness levels, and overall strength of the upper and lower body.
Active Ageing Learn to Swim Lessons
Swimming lessons for older adults led by experienced swimming teachers.
Active Lifestyles Relaxed Swimming
Relaxed session offering a quiet environment, inclusive, friendly, welcoming, fun, and affordable. Safe space and adapted equipment available. Session open to all family, friends, and supporters.
Active Lifestyles Swimming
A quiet and calm public swimming session suitable for all adults.
Aqua Zumba
Make a splash with this low-impact, high-fun exercise class in the water. With less stress on your joints, this class offers all the fun of Zumba.
Active Lifestyles Line Dancing
Choreographed dance class teaching line dancing routines to some great music.
Active Lifestyles Fit Step
An energetic, upbeat dance fitness class featuring all of your favourite Strictly dances. It is suitable for all ages and abilities and you don’t need a partner. You’ll have so much fun and will get fit at the same time.
Dance & Soul
Dance & Soul is a fun energetic class focusing on improving balance, memory, coordination, muscle strength, and confidence.
Seated Exercise
An exercise class based on and around the chair using light weights and resistance bands. The class focuses on movements which help flexibility, strength, coordination, and circulation whilst improving posture and balance.
Full-body workouts with the aim of improving strength and conditioning. Great for people progressing through the Active Lifestyles pathway or for people with good general fitness who are keen to start structured exercise.
Active Lifestyles Easy Movers
A low impact but high paced class offering a mix of cardiovascular, strength, and balance exercises.
Active Lifestyles Indoor Cycling
Ideal for those looking to have a cycle session in the spin bike studio with lively music, emphasis on lower body, and your own fitness levels to challenge.
Active Lifestyles Live Well Circuits
Ideal for those looking to get more active, these classes are low impact and tailored to meet your needs by our experienced team of Health & Wellness Advisors who will provide support and motivation.
Active Lifestyles Live Well Gym
Introduces you to all aspects of exercising in a gym. Once you’ve learned the basics, you’ll be supported with a tailored programme to help you meet your own fitness goals.
Active Lifestyles Steady Steps Plus
A collection of your favourite exercises from the original Steady Steps class just stepped up a gear, with bigger, more challenging movements and a diverse range of equipment.
Active Lifestyles Technogym Improvers
A progressive tailored Technogym class aimed at those who have previous Technogym experience or have progressed from a Technogym Movers class.
Active Lifestyles Zumba
A mix of low and high-intensity Zumba choreography that gives an interval-style dance workout.
Active Lifestyles Movers and Shapers
Ideal for those looking to push a little more. This class utilises a range of equipment and offers an opportunity to develop all areas of fitness: strength, balance, flexibility, and coordination.
Classes designed to bring on a sweat and get participants breathing heavier. Switching between exercise and short rest periods, the exercises have been carefully chosen to avoid any jumping to ensure they are low impact on the joints.
Low Impact High Intensity Interval Training
Full body workout with carefully selected exercises to minimise stress on the joints. A mixture of exercise followed by short rest periods to help improve endurance, strength, and burn calories without jumping around.

Walking football is exactly what it sounds like, a standard game of football where players walk instead of run. It is fun, friendly, and can help you feel fitter and healthier. Sessions are open to beginners and experienced players alike.
Active Lifestyles Pickleball
Pickleball is a paddle sport, similar to a racquet sport, that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis and is played indoors on a badminton court. These fun and sociable sessions are open to beginners and improvers.
Active Lifestyles Table Tennis
These sessions are designed for players of any standard, including complete beginners or those who haven’t played for many years. There is usually a coach available to give guidance to anyone who would like to improve.
Active Lifestyles Walking Football
Walking football is exactly what it sounds like, a standard game of football where players walk instead of run. It is friendly and can help you feel fitter and healthier.
Active Lifestyles Walking Netball
Walking netball is suitable for all ages and abilities. This session is at a walking pace with adapted rules and court size. This coached session is fun, social, and provides great health benefits.
Active Lifestyles Tennis
These coached tennis sessions are designed for players of any ability, from beginners to more experienced players and those who haven’t played for many years.
Active Lifestyles Walking Football BLC
Walking football is an action-packed game of football, just with no running. It’s a great way to stay involved with the beautiful game. Whether you’re looking to keep fit, be sociable, or just want to score a couple of goals, walking football is exactly up your street.
